The last three years have not been kind to fans of DC Comics’ young adult heroes.
The “Young Justice” line of DC’s New 52 has not been well received, with books ranging from the bland (Blue Beetle) to insulting ones intelligence (Teen Titans) and has been full of inconsistent continuity, very poor character design, abysmal stories like The Culling, whitewashing, and just a sense of unpleasantness that will finally come to a momentary end with the last book of the “Young Justice” line ending on April 30th.
So imagine my surprise with the announcement of a new book in DC’s “Earth One” line focusing on that universe’s Teen Titans written by Jeff Lemire (Who may have written a book I really liked) and with art by Terry and Rachel Dodson. The book is taking many staples from the famed Marv Wolfman/George Perez line-up, including Cyborg, Starfire, Raven, Changeling (a.k.a. Beast Boy) and Jericho. It’s an interesting line-up, considering it has none of the sidekicks that formed the original incarnation of the group (although it makes sense, considering on Earth One, Superman and Batman have just started).
As someone who’s optimism about DC’s line up of teen and young adult superheroes has waned these last several years, I have to say, I like what I see. This looks like it can be a very fun book and the creative team makes me very happy.
I hope this book will be a beacon of light for us as it hits all good comic shops on November 19, 2014.
