Within the Marvel canon, Doreen Green has earned her monicker: the unbeatable Squirrel Girl. When it was announced that she’d be joining the New Warriors in their upcoming TV show, rumors and questions over who would play the squirrely superheroine flew about, but now we have our answer.
The cast of Marvel’s “New Warriors” has just been announced, with Milana Vayntrub as Squirrel Girl, Derek Theler as Mister Immortal, and Calum Worthy as Speedball. Joining them will be Jeremy Tardy as Night Thrasher, Matthew Moy as Microbe, and Kate Comer as Debrii.
“New Warriors” is currently slated to run for ten episodes at Freeform, under the direction of show runner Kevin Biegel. The straight-to-series show will begin in April 2018, and is advertised as more of a comedic take on the superhero genre.
Notably, two of the headlining heroes are not actually in the New Warriors in the comics. Both Mr. Immortal and Squirrel Girl are typically members of the Great Lakes Avengers, although Squirrel Girl herself has also been in the New Avengers, now the U.S.Avengers. Given the comedic tone and addition of two of the GLA’s more popular members, it seems “New Warriors” will be something of a hybrid of the two teams from the comics, taking the comedic tone of Great Lakes Avengers.
Milan Vayntrub is perhaps best known for her role as Sloane Sandburg in “This Is Us,” as well as Tara in “Silicon Valley,” and Tina in “Other Space.” She’s also appeared in several CollegeHumor videos, and in a series of AT&T television commercials.
Derek Theler, who will be playing the often-killed Mister Immortal (his only power is his immortality, a fact which has caused him no small amount of pain), is known for his role as Danny Wheeler in “Baby Daddy,” along with several smaller roles in television and shorts, including uncredited appearances on Conan O’Brien.
We’ll have more information on the upcoming “New Warriors” series as it’s announced. Until then, let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
