SCIENCE FICTION-THEMED COMMUNITY EVENT

at the West Sacramento Community Center and the West Sacramento City Hall Galleria,  May 21, 2017

INTERGALACTIC EXPO (IGX) is May 21, 2017, from 10 am to 6 pm, at West Sacramento Civic Center, 1110 West Capitol Avenue, West Sacramento, CA.

We’ll again be celebrating the fandoms of out-of-this-world space sci-fi favorites such as Star Wars, Star Trek, Guardians of the Galaxy, Battlestar Galactica, Firefly, Farscape, and Doctor Who!  Come celebrate space operas and space-set sci-fi at this family-focused, one-day community special event.

Once again, the West Sacramento Department of Parks and Recreation, the staff of Toy Fusion and members of the community resource sacgeeks.com are working together with cosplay clubs, entertainers, fan organizations and businesses – all from the local community — to present a fun, family-centric fandom convention that is also a fundraiser for Make-A-Wish ® (Northeastern California and Northern Nevada chapter) and other great local charities and organizations.

There will be vendors galore, artists, special guests, fascinating panels, light saber demos, live music, live entertainment, a cosplay contest, games, charity auction and drawing, food trucks and tons of photo ops!

Thanks to talented cosplayers from the 501st Legion Central California, the USS Independence NCC-75029, the Sacramento Cosplay, West Coast Avengers and other local cosplay groups, attendees will have the opportunity to pose for pics with Darth Vader, Stormtroopers, BB-8, R2D2, Starfleet Officers, Guardians of the Galaxy crew, various science fiction movie villains and other awesome characters.  There will even be an X-Wing and Tie-Fighter available for pics!

Special guests include C. Andrew Nelson and Mark Dodson as well as many other interesting local guests and performers (full list is available on the IGX website).

Intergalactic Expo is the 2017 iteration of West Sacramento’s 2012 and 2013 May the Fourth Be With You community event / fan convention, and our third Intergalactic Expo.

Schedule, vendor list, special guest information, location info and other details can be found at www.intergalacticexpo.com

THE MISSION:

Intergalactic Expo is a partnership between the City of West Sacramento Department of Parks and Recreation, local business ToyFusion, and the not-for-profit community resource organization Sacgeeks.com.

Our goal is to provide quality, family-focused entertainment and resources from local organizations at an affordable price, along with excellent customer service, tailored to area fans of popular science fiction and space operas, while raising funds for Make-A-Wish ® (Northeastern California and Northern Nevada chapter) and the City of West Sacramento community programs.

This event is in part to benefit Make-A-Wish ® Northeastern California and Northern Nevada, with the goal of raising $5000 to be used to grant one child’s wish.

OUR HISTORY:

In the Winter of 2013, the Superintendent of the West Sacramento Department of Parks and Recreation contacted the leadership of SacGeeks.com, asking for assistance in planning a “May the Fourth Be With You”-themed celebration at their new West Sacramento Community Center.

SacGeeks.com (a not-for-profit community resource, and event planning and promotions organization) reached out to the owner of Sacramento-based collectibles store Toy Fusion, as well as to the local members of the 501st Legion Central California Garrison and other local cosplay clubs, entertainers and fan organizations.  Together, they organized an evening community event that included cosplay, vendors and live entertainment; it was held Saturday May 4th, 2013, for approximately 700 guests, and managed to raise & donate almost two thousand dollars for Make-A-Wish ® Northeastern California and Northern Nevada.

In May 2014, we all got back together on Sunday May 4th, for the second May the Fourth Be With You event, this time it was a full day event, drew 1700 guests, and donated $5000 for Make-A-Wish ® Northeastern California and Northern Nevada!

Later that month, we realized that May the Fourth would no longer fall on a weekend for a few years, and we decided to expand the planned 2015 event to include even more partners and space scifi fandoms, for even more fun.  So in early June, we held a contest on our Facebook Group to rename the event, and, on June 10, 2014,  the submitted name, “Intergalactic Expo” was selected and announced as the winner!

And so SacGeeks.com had our 3rd annual scifi event with West Sacramento Parks and Recreation, which was also our first annual Intergalactic Expo, on Saturday and Sunday, May 2 and 3, 2015 !

In 2015 and 2016, our convention was even bigger and better, celebrating out-of-this-world fan favorites Star Wars, Star Trek, Firefly, Farscape, and Doctor Who!  These are some of the all-time favorite sci-fi shows of locals, and as last time, our focus was on local fandoms and fan communities!

We had some lovely and generous support by many awesome community fandom groups, including but not limited to the 501st Legion Central California Garrison, Saber Guild: Golden Gate Temple, Sacramento Steampunk Society, the USS Independence, and more!  (See the gray oval on the right for a longer list.)

And again, the 2015 and 2016 event was in part to benefit Make-A-Wish ® Northeastern California and Northern Nevada, and we succeeded in our the goal of raising and donating $5000, the average amount needed to grant one child’s wish!  (For additional information on Make-A-Wish, go to www.necannv.wish.org.) We also donated to the El Camino High School Pep Band and West Sacramento’s Moo-La fund for children’s programs.

Happily, due to the success of these past years’ events, and thanks to supporters like you, we’ll be back in May of 2017, and again our event will be in part to benefit Make-A-Wish ® Northeastern California and Northern Nevada!

Won’t you please join us in the fun and help us in our mission, by attending our May 2017 Intergalactic Expo in West Sacramento?

Enjoy a set of my photos I took at last years event.
