OAKLAND CITY MAYOR WELCOMES EVOLUTION EXPO TO OAKLAND AND THE GREATER BAY AREA
“Evo Kids” Program Offers Event’s Youngsters a Uniquely Entertaining & Educational Experience
OAKLAND, Calif. (April 10, 2014) – Evolution Expo, an event which will put the science back into science fiction and includes fun and stimulating programs for kids, continues to gain community support. Oakland City Mayor Jean Quan indicates, “I’m excited to welcome Evolution Expo to Oakland. Its commitment to the Chabot Space and Science Center as well as the Oakland Unified School District demonstrates its belief in giving back to our community, while bringing an entertaining event to our city. We look forward to a long and enduring relationship.”

Showcasing sci-fi celebrities alongside real life scientists, Evo Expo continues to ramp up by developing exciting new initiatives for the whole family. The event takes place at the Oakland Marriott June 27-29 with headline speakers including Emmy nominated actress and neuroscientist, Mayim Bialik, astronauts Wendy Lawrence and Joe Edwards, planetary scientists Dr. Pascal Lee and Dr. Chris McKay, as well as actors Tom Skerritt, Veronica Cartwright and Kevin Sorbo.
A lively and youthful aspect of the convention is the addition of Evo Kids. Evo Kids is an educational program focusing on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) curriculum and is guided by Tony Leavitt, Education Specialist for NASA Ames.
Observes Leavitt, “Engaging kids (young and old) directly with science and the arts through events like Evolution Expo’s Evo Kids program will encourage critical thinking and inspire new possibilities for their futures. As an educator with NASA and The STEM-Space Project I am thrilled and eager to help facilitate such opportunities.” Featured activities of Evo Kids include a Think Tank and Brainstorm Room, where kids will attempt to answer the question of how we’ll get a human to Mars; a Build Your Own Gravity Data Board workshop which controls robots; and the Chabot Space and Science Center’s portable planetarium and interactive exhibits.
The fun doesn’t stop when the sun goes down as evenings at Evolution Expo are full of excitement. Friday night will feature Jefferson Starship in concert with the Los Angeles rock band Spock’s Beard at Oakland Marriott City Center; tickets go on sale May 1. Then on Saturday night, attendees will not want to miss Space Age Karaoke with Garrett Wang (Star Trek: Voyager).
