It has been reported that Tom Hardy has dropped out of David Ayer’s Suicide Squad due to scheduling conflicts. Apparently that’s not the real reason he left. According to Latino-Review, the real reason why he dropped out was because he didn’t like the final script of the film.
So what is it that he may have not liked about the script? Apparently Deadshot and The Joker were given more screen time than some of the other villains in the story like Rick Flagg, which is the character Hardy was supposed to play. In the end, does it really matter as long as the story is good? The filmmakers have to do what is right for the story, and if that means cutting back on certain characters, then so be it.
This movie has an ensemble cast and features a lot of different main characters. Ayer’s last film, Fury, was like that, and he did a great job balancing all of those characters. I imagine he’ll be able to do the same thing with Suicide Squad. I like Hardy as an actor, but maybe he isn’t one of those guys that is willing to sacrifice for the rest of the team to help make a better film.
I should point out, though, that all of the actors who signed on to the project did so without reading a script. The script didn’t come until after the fact, so maybe there was a legitimate reason as to why he left, but I hope it’s not because his character didn’t have enough screen time. That would be a shame.
According to TheWrap, Jake Gyllenhaal, most recently the star of Nightcrawler, is being eyed by director David Ayer to replace Tom Hardy as Rick Flag. Recently, Hardy was forced to leave the film due to prior engagements, including Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s The Revenant as well as promoting Warner Bros’ Mad Max: Fury Road. Suicide Squad was expected to start filming this April, and it just doesn’t work with Hardy’s schedule.
Ayer has worked with Gyllenhaal before on the 2012 film End of Watch and has emerged as Ayer’s favorite for the part. As of this time, Warner Brothers has no comment on this and Gyllenhaal’s representative has not responded.
Suicide Squad follows a group of imprisoned super-villains working dangerous missions for a secret government agency in order to get clemency for their past actions. The film will star Will Smith as Deadshot, Jai Courtney as Boomerang, Morgot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jared Leto as The Joker, and Cara Delevigne as Enchantress. Viola Davis is still in negotiations to play Amanda Waller, and Jesse Eisenberg is rumored to appear as Lex Luthor in this film as well.
