Bryan Singer is back in the X-Men director’s chair.

The filmmaker has closed a deal to direct X-Men: Apocalypse, the latest X-Men tentpole that follows on the heels of this summer’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, THR has confirmed.

Singer’s involvement was a question mark due to allegations of sex abuse, filed just weeks before Days of Future Past’s opening. That put his involvement up in the air as the scandal played out. In August, Singer’s accuser, Michael Egan, withdrew his lawsuit.

In June, 20th Century Fox production president Emma Watts told THR that she wanted Singer back for the sequel, despite the scandal: “Nothing would make me happier than if it all worked out. It’s always been the intention for him to do it.”

Singer directed the first two X-Men movies, missed the third and the fourth when he jumped to direct Superman Returns for Warner Bros., and was able to wrap things off nicely for his original cast with Days of Future Past. The movie grossed over $745 million worldwide.

The story is will be set in the 80s, continuing the period element introduced in First Class.
