Ever since Marvel and Sony announced they’d cut a deal to bring Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), fans have been eagerly awaiting the name of the next actor to bring Peter Parker to life on the big screen. Now, the race for Spidey is reportedly starting to heat up tension between the two companies.
The news comes from The Wrap’s Jeff Sneider, who appeared on the Making Movies podcast to drop some news about the casting race, revealing that long-time front-runner Asa Butterfield is suddenly not being considered anymore. Sneider claims his sources are telling him the new contenders are Charlie Plummer, Tom Holland and Matthew Lintz.
While all three names are reportedly in the running, Marvel is favoring Plummer while Sony is more interested
in Holland. If these rumors are true, it would seem that Marvel and Sony’s bold partnership is already off to a rocky start, since the two can’t seem to jump the first hurdle in the process – casting. As IGN notes, Sony is footing the bill for the 2017 standalone movie, which will likely trump Marvel president Kevin Feige’s creative control.
However, this could all be a moot point as Birth. Movies. Death. (formerly Badass Digest) is reporting that the casting race is actually down to two actors, Holland and Charlie Rowe. According to the outlet, Rowe, a former child actor who appeared in “The Golden Compass,” is in a dead heat with Holland.
Marvel and Sony will need to rectify the situation soon. If rumors are true, the two companies are hoping to introduce the new Peter Parker in 2016’s “Captain America: Civil War,” which is currently filming. With the movie already packing more superheroes than your average “Avengers” flick, it’s likely that if Spider-Man is introduced he won’t have a huge role. However, he’ll still need to have an actor behind the mask.
Sony and Marvel are reportedly hoping to skip the well-treaded origin story of the Spider-Man character and lean heavily on the fact that he can finally appear with other MCU characters to bolster interest. Earlier reports indicated that Spidey’s sixth movie since 2002 will see him team up with Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) as the latter character tests the wall-crawler in the hopes of making him a full-fledged Avenger.
Who do you want to see play the next Spider-Man?
