According to reports, Hulk may undergo a major change in color in Avengers: Age of Ultron. New merchandise created for the movie has stirred speculations regarding the Bruce Banner’s alter-ego as the savage grey giant. However, this change could supposedly be caused by Scarlet Witch’s ability to reveal a different version of reality.
PopVinyls.com shared a photo of the merchandise showing the other Avengers in their respective colored suits. However, this particular “Hot Topic Exclusive Savage Hulk” item shows the giant in grey color instead of green. The representation may not have a direct link to the sequel, but Cinema Blend claimed there’s a slight chance Hulk could be turning grey, given all the other toys are in their respective costumes as seen in the trailer. The site supposed Hulk turning green is caused by Scarlet Witch.
In the Marvel comics, Wanda Maximoff a.k.a. Scarlet Witch is described as a mutant with telekinetic powers. Her powers were clearly shown in the second trailer, where she’s seen tossing cars as well as Tony Stark. Additionally, according to a previous report from the International Business Times, she also has the power to create an alternate view of reality and can even control those people around her. It’s believed Hulk turning grey in “Avengers: Age of Ultron” is a hallucination or a “curse” she conjured upon the giant.
According to Cinemablend, this hallucination could be a scenario where he turns grey. The grey version of the Hulk is said to be more out of control than his normal self and is more “savage.” Writer Adam Holmes supposed he could also undergo a physical change and turn into the grey giant with red eyes. The toy features him with red eyes, much like the one seen on the green giant in the second trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron.
However, in the comics, a grey Hulk has reportedly already existed. It was believed to be his original colour when he was introduced in 1962. The grey Hulk is said to be a separate personality from Bruce Banner and the normal or green Hulk. According to Cinema Blend, the grey one is more intelligent, more manipulative and shrewd. The character was then named Joe Fixit, who became a Las Vegas enforcer.
Whether Bruce Banner will turn into a grey Hulk in “Avengers: Age of Ultron” remains unclear. Rumours have it Scarlet Witch will use her powers on the giant in the sequel to make him fight Iron Man. The red eyes are supposedly an indication that he is bewitched. Even Mark Rufallo, who plays the character, said in an interview that Scarlet Witch “is able to bring out the worst” in the Avengers.
