Cosplay Interview: Lopti – Some Like It Blue

 IMG_9663Bio:
Lopti is a 24 year old cosplay artist/aspiring model. She has a passion for theatrical makeup, and loves to look for the little details that bring a character to life. Many of her most beloved comic book characters are blue in color, which brought about the name of her site, “Some Like It Blue”! She is best known for her cosplays as Marvel’s Loki Laufeyson and Mystique, but also enjoys cosplaying characters from her favorite video games and fantasy stories.

G33K-HQ: When did you start cosplaying?
Lopti: Ever since I was a little girl, I loved dressing up. But I really started costuming when I was 13 and attended my first Renaissance Festival. I fell in love with the entire experience, but the costumes most of all. With the help of my mom, I began making dresses to wear to the festival each year. It wasn’t until I was 20 that I branched out of the Renaissance realm and into the comic book scene. Now I’ve been cosplaying regularly for the last four years.

G33K-HQ: What was your favorite character to cosplay as?
Lopti: That is a tough questions. I love all the characters I cosplay, and have a very deep connection with each of them. However, if I had to choose, I would say Mystique. There’s something so dynamic about her character, not to mention the extensive makeup is extremely eye-catching. She’s a lot of fun to play.

G33K-HQ: What first attracted you to cosplay?
Lopti: My love for costumes and fantasy. Combining the two into the same hobby seemed like a dream come true! And it still is.

_MG_0179logoG33K-HQ: What is your favorite part of doing cosplay?
Lopti: I love being able to “become” another person or creature. In real life, I’m very shy. But when I’m in costume, I feel invincible. I can talk, laugh, and enjoy people’s company without every worrying about what they’re thinking. Because, let’s face it – when you’re both in weird costumes, there’s not much else that you can say/do that will embarrass you. I also enjoy taking on traits of the character I’m cosplaying. If I’m dressed as Loki, I’m a bit more snarky. If I’m Galadriel, I’m more serene. It’s fun to change who you are, if even just for a day.

G33K-HQ: What conventions/events will you be at this year?
Lopti: I will be a guest at ValhallaCon in South Carolina, and I’m hoping to attend DragonCon.  There are also quite a few others that are still up in the air at this point.

G33K-HQ: What was the first con you went to? What was your general reaction to it?
Lopti: Strangely enough, the first convention I ever attended was DragonCon. Go big or go home, right? Hah! It was a fantastic weekend, and I was overwhelmed by the experience. I came back home exhausted, but already excited for the next year’s Con.

Lopti: Honestly, it doesn’t truly influence my character selection at all. Yes, I want my followers to be happy with that I cosplay, but more than that, I want to enjoy my costumes! I select my characters solely because I love them. I would never cosplay a character that I didn’t absolutely adore. There’s something so special about “becoming” a character that you hold dear to your heart. And you’ll never regret the time and money that’s put into a costume if you love the character.

G33K-HQ: Do you have a dream cosplay?
Lopti: My dream cosplay is to be a Draenei from World of Warcraft. I’d want to have the Priest Tier Five Avatar gear, which is extremely ornate. But it would be so beautiful!

IMG_6917G33K-HQ: Most memorable moment whilst cosplaying?
Lopti: A friend and I went bowling dressed as Loki and Thor. To say the least, we got some REALLY funny looks. We had great fun, but quickly learned that it’s extremely hard to bowl in tight pleather. I don’t think either of us broke 100, but the humiliation was worth it for the fun we had.

G33K-HQ: Have you had any cosplays go wrong/encountered problems whilst making cosplays?

Lopti: When I went out for my first photoshoot as Jotun Loki, I fell in the snow and ended up getting blue paint EVERYWHERE. Including all over my photographer. It was a good laugh for us both, but also gave me quite a challenge to clean the blue off the costume.
G33K-HQ: Do you have one piece of advice that you would give to cosplay virgins?
Lopti: Have fun! Cosplay isn’t about the number of followers you have, or how much money you can put into your costumes. It’s about enjoying yourself, and having a good time with people who like the same things you do.

G33K-HQ: What is your dream con to go to and why?
Lopti: I would love to go to San Diego Comic Con someday. Having that many geeks all crammed into one city for an entire weekend just sounds like a blast.  🙂

G33K-HQ: If you could be any character in your fave story who would that be and which story?
Lopti: Galadriel from Lord of the Rings. I grew up having a serious obsession with Lord of the Rings, and the elves always fascinated me. There was something so soft and yet to strong about Galadriel that always drew me in. She’s a fantastic character.

1655190_10202092321047098_1500450955_nG33K-HQ: What does the word “geek” mean to you?
Lopti: I’ve always taken it to mean a person who is interested in things that are not mainstream. Like, most geeks I know have very little interest in sports, but would rather opt to play boardgames, video games, or roleplaying games. They may be thought of as strange by society, but they don’t mind being strange, because they enjoy the things that other people call “weird”.

G33K-HQ: What is your earliest geek memory?
Lopti: I grew up with a father who loved Star Wars. Some of my very first memories were of watching Star Wars with my dad and pretending to be Princess Leia. I even used the soap foam that you’re supposed to use in the bathtub to make the buns on the side of my head.

G33K-HQ: Do you consider yourself a “geek”?
Lopti: Absolutely! And proud of it! I’m a comic book loving, video gaming, cosplayer girl, who has a mild obsession with all things Sci-Fi and fantasy related. I don’t think my geek-dom can be debated at this point.  😉

G33K-HQ: Money is no object, what geek collectible you would purchase? (real Batmobile, Superman #1, etc.)
Lopti: The helmet Tom Hiddleston wore as Loki in Thor.

IMG_6354G33K-HQ: Can you share with us any future cosplays you are planning?

Lopti: These are a few I’m hoping to complete in the next year or so: Elsa from Frozen, a Faun from mythology, Pippin Took from Lord of the Rings, Loki from Thor 2, and potentially that Draenei I mentioned above.  🙂
