DC Responds to Fan Outcry Over Sexist T-shirts

Following public outcry from two licensed t-shirts widely deemed sexist, DC Comics CBR News has received an official response via a DC Entertainment spokesperson. The statement says DC agrees the messages are offensive, and that changes may be made in the licensed products process going forward.

DC Comics is home to many of the greatest male and female Super Heroes in the world. All our fans are incredibly important to us, and we understand that the messages on certain t-shirts are offensive. We agree. Our company is committed to empowering boys and girls, men and women, through our characters and stories. Accordingly, we are taking a look at our licensing and product design process to ensure that all our consumer products reflect our core values and philosophy.

Two widely criticized licensed DC Comics shirts.
This following the the recent issue with a lack of female characters in the Axis of Villains board game, DC is at two strikes now.

One of the two shirts at the center of the issue feature Superman and Wonder Woman.  The shirt reads, “Score! Superman does it again.” The second, found online, features a purple Batman logo, and reads, “Training to be Batman’s wife.”

The online reaction to both shirts in the past two days has been swift and largely negative. On Robot 6, CBR’s Brett White wrote, “The former positions the most prominent female superhero as a prize to be won, stripping away the character’s 75 years of nuance and feminist themes. The latter would be perfectly acceptable if it had only stopped before that final word; the assumption that the goal of any woman’s training would be to become someone’s wife is antiquated at best.”
