As part of NASA’s latest mission Scott Kelly will be the first american to live in space more then 215 days. NASA plans to not only use the opportunity to study effects of pronged spaceflight on astronauts, but also preform other studies like one on identical twins as Scott & his brother Mark are. The study is “dubbed the Twins Study” and will have have “10 investigations, ranging from how spaceflight affects their eyesight to gut bacteria to changes in gene activity.” The two brothers have lived very similar lives, which will give Nasa a great study.
Craig Kundrot, deputy chief scientist of NASA’s Human Research Program said:
“We realized this is a unique opportunity to perform a class of novel studies because we had one twin flying aboard the International Space Station and one twin on the ground……We can study two individuals who have the same genetics, but are in different environments for one year.”
Scott Kelly said:
“We’re doing this so that we can mitigate those effects, so we can eventually go beyond low-Earth orbit one day and explore further than we’ve gone before,”
