The Mel Brooks classic comedy, “Young Frankenstein,” made its musical debut several years ago. Now, the musical will be coming to TV on ABC.
As announced at the TCA press tour, ABC will be airing the live TV musical, although the cast and air date have not been revealed. ABC recently saw success in November with a live TV musical version of “The Little Mermaid,” starring Auli’i Cravalho and Queen Latifah. While Mel Brooks’ comedy is more than a little different from Disney’s classic musical, it has a dedicated following.
“Young Frankenstein” was adapted from film to Broadway in 2007 and earned three Tony nominations. The story follows the grandson of Victor Frankenstein as he’s called to Transylvania, at first refusing to follow his grandfather’s work before embracing it and creating his own reanimated man.
This is not the first Mel Brooks movie to be turned into a musical. “The Producers” was adapted for the stage in 2001, before the adaptation itself was turned into a theatrical film in 2005. “Young Frankenstein” also ends with a joke about “Blazing Saddles” being next, although no such musical has been announced yet.
While little is know about ABC’s plans for the live TV version, we can expect to hear casting news and announcements in the near future.
