Back when I was in elementary school, I used to love the “Captain Underpants” books by Dav Pilkey. They inspired me to try my own hand at cartooning, and while I was never very good at the art aspect of it, that’s what eventually lead me down the path of a writer, which is why I can write this article for you today. I suppose that kind of makes it come about full-circle, as I can now report on the upcoming Captain Underpants movie.
According to Behind The Voice Actors, casting has begun for a Captain Underpants movie, animated by Dreamworks. Ed Helms, known for his role as the Once-ler in “The Lorax” and Stuart in “The Hangover” has been brought on board to voice the title character, with Kevin hart and Thomas Middleditch as George and Harold, the two fourth-graders responsible for his creation.
While the movie rights were acquired back in 2011, this is the first news we’ve had in a while. In 2013, Rob Letterman was signed on to direct, with Nicholas Stoller writing the script. Now that we have more of a cast, we can start to expect more news on it.
For those who never read the books, the series features the aforementioned Harold and George, pranksters of the first degree who also write comics to sell to their fellow students. After getting in trouble with their nasty principal, Mr. Krupp, they use a hypno-ring to hypnotize him into becoming Captain Underpants. From then on, whenever Mr. Krupp hears the sound of snapping fingers, he immediately reverts to his hypnotized state, strips to his undies, and goes to fight crime.
The books were quite clever, featuring amusing character, funny pranks, and the occasional flip-o-rama pages, where the reader would flip two pages back and forth to make it look like the pictures were moving. That might be a bit tricky to translate to film, but the clever writing and characters should remain.
One thing of note is that Nick Kroll has been signed on as Professor Pippy P. Poopypants, antagonist of the fourth book, “Captain Underpants and the Perilous Plot of Professor Poopypants.” What makes this interesting is that in the previous book, “Captain Underpants and the Invasion of the Incredibly Naughty Cafeteria Ladies from Outer Space (And the Subsequent Assault of the Equally Evil Lunchroom Zombie Nerds),” Captain America was given superpowers through an alien milkshake. Those powers were what allowed him to fight Professor Pooypants’ giant robot, but if the movie skips ahead to Professor Poopypants’ appearance, he will not have the chance to get those powers. So can we expect to see cafeteria ladies from outer space, or will the movie change the manner in which he’s given powers?
That book is also notable for introducing a “name change chart” before Facebook was around to make them popular and widely-shared. You can change your name on the Captain Underpants website: http://www.scholastic.com/captainunderpants/poopypants.htm
The only other cast member announced so far is Jordan Peele as Melvin, George and Harolds’ nerdy archnemesis. Additional characters and actors have yet to be announced, but we’ll keep providing you with more information as it comes.
