Disney has been quite busy with its live-action adaptations of classic films. Following the relative success of Maleficent, and superior reception of Cinderella, we have another one to look forward to following the upcoming Beauty and the Beast, Alice in Wonderland, and The Jungle Book: Mulan.
Disney has purchased a script from Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek, bringing the classic tale of Hua Mulan to life. Chris Bender and J.C. Spink are currently attached to produce, although no other actors have been announced. However, current chatter online has fans of Once Upon a Time hoping for Jamie Chung, who played Mulan in the TV show, to take up the role.
The animated feature aired in 1998, starring Ming-Na Wen as Mulan (now kicking just as much butt as Melinda May in Agents of SHIELD), Donny Osmond as Li Shang, and Eddie Murphy as Mushu the dragon. To this day, you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who doesn’t know the way to be a man is to be swift as a coursing river, with all the force of a great typhoon, all the strength of a raging fire, and mysterious as the dark side of the moon. Sadly, it seems unlikely that the epic training montage song will make it to the live-action adaptation.
More news will be made available as we learn it.
