On the heels of the death of the Goblin King and avid performer, David Bowie, who passed on January 10th of this year, the world has lost the profound actor Alan Rickman.
For many, he was simply an amazing actor with a resume longer than most people’s arm, having played Hans Gruber from Die Hard, Ronald Reagan (yes really) in The Butler, Alexander Dane from Galaxy Quest, and Marvin the manic depressed robot in Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. And that is only naming a few.
But to so many other fans, this man was and is Severus Snape, the Potions Master, Defense against the Dark Arts teach in the sixth year, and the Headmaster and tortured hero in Deathly Hallows.
He was a giant in every way, having made unforgettable characters in stories that will stick with fans forever. He transformed an insidious character into flesh and blood for fans, bringing us joy, terror, laughs, and heartbreak. In every way, this man is a part of our hearts and minds when we think of Harry Potter.
At 69, he lived a long full life, which fans will only hope to remember a small part of. He is survived by his partner Rima Horton who was Rickman’s teenage sweetheart. We send her all our love and thoughts, for, while we lost an icon, she lost her husband.
Rest in Peace, Alan Rickman. You will always be our Severus Snape. Always
