Recently, Lucy Lawless expressed interest in bringing back her character Xena, the warrior princess of TV fame, to the small screen. Well, it seems someone was listening, because NBC is already preparing to do that.
While the idea is still in its early developmental stages, Rob Tapert (co-creator of the original series and husband of Lucy Lawless) and Sam Raimi are taking the helm. What role Lawless herself will play is currently unknown; the show may be looking for a younger Xena, possibly as a spinoff, but there’s no doubt she’ll return to the show in some capacity. After all, as her brief run in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has shown us, she’s still capable of kicking plenty of butt.
The project is considered a “modern reboot,” though how modern one can make a fantasy series is an interesting question. Apparently they hope to combine the “charisma and charm” that Lawless brought to the original role, while bringing in the intelligence of Katniss from The Hunger Games. No actors are cast yet.
The hope is to have the show ready for TV by 2016. However, we’ll be able to see Lucy Lawless in action again sooner than that, when she appears in the upcoming Ash vs Evil Dead.
