The Doctor has regenerated, and will be back with us in under two months. To help ease the wait (or perhaps make it even more unbearable from anticipation), BBC America has released some information about the upcoming season, as well as a 16-second teaser.
A recurring theme in the 11th Doctor’s run was the idea of being “a good man.” We’ve seen it before in “A Good Man Goes to War,” and during “Day of the Doctor,” Clara is giving a lecture to her class and quotes, “Waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be. Be one.”
However, with regeneration, a new Doctor means a new personality and new quirks. While the 10th Doctor famously asked if he was ginger, this teaser has the 12th Doctor asking, “Am I a good man?”
“I don’t think I know who the Doctor is anymore,” Clara answers.
Of course, that’s one of the exciting things about getting a new Doctor: we don’t know who he really is yet, and neither does he. The 10th Doctor put it quite well when he said, “See, here’s the thing: I’m the Doctor, but beyond that, I just don’t know. I literally do not know who I am, it’s all untested.” Now it looks like the 12th Doctor will have to figure out who he is once again.
The trailer provides very little dialogue, but we get a nice silhouette of Peter Capaldi as the 12th Doctor, illuminated by fires and sparks coming from inside the TARDIS. It’s all very exciting, as one might imagine, but rather than take my word for it, you can watch the video below.
The new season of Doctor Who airs on Saturday, August 23rd at 8 PM ET/PT. Along with Peter Capaldi as the new Doctor and Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald, Samuel Anderson will be joining the cast as Danny Pink, a fellow teacher at Coal Hill School. Now all the Doctor needs is his granddaughter back, and it’ll be the first TARDIS crew all over again.
So, who’s looking forward to seeing Capaldi in action? There’s only so much time left until the new season begins, but we’ll have to get there the way time usually travels: slowly, and in a single direction.
