It looks like Amazon‘s cast for their upcoming live action series ‘The Boys’ is really shaping up quite nicely with the casting of Karl Urban (Dredd and Star Trek) as Billy Butcher. As a huge fan of the fantastic comic book series by Garth Ennis (Preacher and Punisher) and Darick Robertson (Transmetropolitan and HAPPY!) this is a great casting choice as Urban will no doubt bring both the intensity and levity that will do the character justice.
For those who aren’t familiar with the series ‘The Boys’ is a comic book series that ran from October 2006 to November 2012;
The Boys takes places in a world where superheroes embrace the darker side of their massive celebrity and fame, and centers on a group of vigilantes known informally as “the boys” who set out to take down corrupt superheroes with no more than blue-collar grit and a willingness to fight dirty.
If you haven’t yet checked it out, we definitely suggest giving it a read. Urban’s role of Billy Butcher is described as a “mysterious and brutal with a personal but secret agenda. He approaches Hughie (Jack Quaid), claiming to be a shadowy government operative. Butcher capitalizes on Hughie’s rage over his girlfriend Robin’s accidental death at the hands of Superhero A-Train (Jessie T. Usher) and enlists Hughie as part of his plan to bring down the superhero system.”
My only complaint about this television series thus far is the fact that Wee Hughie isn’t played by Simon Pegg (Slaughterhouse Rulez and Ready Player One) whose appearance the character is modeled after. But still with all the awesome names attached to this project it does look pretty brilliant. Really excited to see the end product!The Hollywood Reporter]
