Viewers of Doctor Who were first introduced to River Song when she met the 10th Doctor and gave her life to save countless people. Then they got to know her during the 11th Doctor’s run – time travel will do that. Although it seemed like the Doctor said goodbye to River for good in “The Name of the Doctor,” news has just come out that she’ll be back for Christmas.
The BBC website has announced that Alex Kingston will be returning to the role of River Song in the 2015 Doctor Who Christmas special, appearing alongside Peter Capaldi as the 12th Doctor. It is described as the first time she meets the Doctor in his current incarnation (having spent most of her time with the 11th Doctor), so we’ll see how she meshes with 12 and his angry eyebrows.
“To be honest, I did not know whether River would ever return to the show,” Kingston commented. “But here she is, back with the Doctor for the Christmas special. Steven Moffat is on glittering form, giving us an episode filled with humor and surprise guest castings. I met Peter for the first time at Monday’s read through, we had a laugh, and I am now excited and ready to start filming with him and the Doctor Who team. Christmas in September? Why not!”
The good thing about time travelers crossing paths at different points in their timelines is that you never know when they’ll pop back up, but you’ll also never know what time will be the last. One person’s goodbye may be another’s hello, as we saw with the 10th Doctor and River in the two-parter “Silence in the Library” and “Forest of the Dead.” So their timey-wimey paths are crossing again, and we can look forward to seeing River Song’s return this Christmas.
