While Whovians are looking forward to the introduction of a new Doctor, the possibility of a new companion has slipped our minds. Jenna Coleman’s character, Clara Oswald, is still a relatively new character, so the idea of replacing her so soon is laughable – but there’s no rule that says only one companion per TARDIS.
After all, the 11th Doctor’s previous companion couple, Amy and Rory, were successful enough to last several seasons. While Ten traveled with solo companions more often than not, Rose and Mickey spent time traveling together with him, and before that, Rose was joined (incredibly briefly) by Adam Mitchell and (less briefly) by Jack Harkness while with the Ninth Doctor. That’s not even getting into all the classic companions who have traveled with the Doctor, starting with Susan (his granddaughter) and her teachers, Ian and Barbara, all the way through the expanded universe.
As such, it shouldn’t be too surprising that word is a new companion will be joining the Doctor and Clara once he reaches his next regeneration. Reports from NerdBastards and The Mary Sue cite rumors suggesting that they’ll be joined by Tom Wald (Tristan Beint), who briefly appeared in “The Day of the Doctor” as a fellow teacher at Coal Hill. There is no official word yet, so this is not to be taken as anything more than just a possibility, but it’s not unheard of for the Doctor to travel with a couple of teachers.
Although the actor has teased Twitter followers with the possibility, that is in no way a confirmation one way or another. As such, this could easily fall into the realm of “what could have been,” but now that Clara’s mystery has been solved, and we know what makes her the impossible girl, a fellow companion joining her and the Doctor may mix things up nicely. Sure, we’ll have the new Doctor to get to know first, but that’s as good a time to add a new companion to the mix as any.
Still, as we can only guess and assume, I’d like to hear from you. Who would you like to see join the Doctor and Clara as they travel time and space? Should we get a second companion to join them, or is just two in the TARDIS enough? What about a new model of K-9 instead? Post your thoughts in the comments and let us know what you think!
