Wizards of the Coast has announced a new adventure collection coming to Dungeons & Dragons: “Candlekeep Mysteries.” This new book will feature seventeen adventures, providing new mysteries in the world of D&D.
Candlekeep is a major location in the Forgotten Realms setting. Both a library and a fortress, it’s filled with books and scrolls containing the greatest collection of writings and knowledge throughout Faerun. While players got to visit Candlekeep briefly in “Descent Into Avernus,” “Candlekeep Mysteries” uses the location as a central hub for its adventures.
According to the announcement: “Each adventure begins with the discovery of a book, and each book is the key to a door behind which danger and glory await.” Details on the adventures have not been revealed, but it sounds like Candlekeep will serve as a base of sorts where the missions can begin or end as players find the books.
The book’s cover boasts “seventeen mystery-themed adventures,” which are designed for characters from levels 1-16. Each adventure can be run as a one-shot game or included as part of an ongoing campaign. The adventure writers include: Graeme Barber, Kelly Lynne D’angelo, Alison Huang, Mark Hulmes, Jennifer Kretchmer, Daniel Kwan, Adam Lee, Ari Levitch, Sarah Madsen, Christopher Perkins, Michael Polkinghorn, Taymoor Rehman, Derek Ruiz, Kienna Shaw, Brandes Stoddard, Amy Vorpahl, and Toni Winslow-Brill.
This is not the first adventure anthology for D&D 5th edition. Previous anthologies include “Tales From the Yawning Portal,” which adapted many classic adventures (such as “Dead in Thay” and “Tomb of Horrors”) to 5th edition, and “Ghosts of Saltmarsh,” which featured nautical-themed adventures.
How the adventures will be handled in the D&D Adventurers League organized play system is currently unknown, given how the new “Seasonal” format Adventurers League is using locks characters out of content based on its release.
Along with the adventures, “Candlekeep Mysteries” will include a poster map of Candlekeep and detailed descriptions of the library fortress and its inhabitants. The book will also include an alternate cover, available exclusively in game stores.
“Candlekeep Mysteries” will be available March 16, 2021. Check with your friendly local game store for reservations.
