Dungeons & Dragons is expanding its universe once again. Hot on the heels of “Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount” is another setting book, once again returning to a world of Magic: The Gathering in “Mythic Odysseys of Theros.”
According to the Wizards of the Coast website:
“Legends walk the lands of Theros, a realm shaped by deities and the deeds of heroes. From the temples of omen-speaking oracles to the five realms of the Underworld, the champions of the gods vie for immortal favor and a place among the world’s living myths.
Choose a supernatural gift that sets you on the path of destiny, align yourself with one of Theros’s fifteen gods, then carve a tale of odysseys and ordeals across the domains of mortals, gods, and the dead.
What legends will you challenge—mighty heroes, inevitable prophecies, or titans imprisoned by the gods? Where will destiny and immortal schemes lead you? And what tales will you leave behind, celebrated in the pantheon of myths and writ among the eternal stars?”
The new sourcebook introduces several new options for character creation, such as Satyr or the Paladin’s Oath of Heroism. It also introduces new supernatural gifts that can be used in similar ways to character races. Additionally, the book will include a number of new monsters local to Theros, as well as powerful new magic items called god-weapons.
In Magic: The Gathering, Theros is a plane based heavily on Greek mythology. This is reflected in the mythos, which features gods defeating and sealing away the titans that ruled the world before them, and card designs that draw from classical Greek imagery. The book’s cover emphasizes this, featuring a warrior clad in gold armor fighting a massive Hydra-like creature.
Dungeons & Dragons has crossed over with Magic: The Gathering before. “Guildmaster’s Guide to Ravnica” introduced Ravnica as a proper Dungeons & Dragons setting, while the Plane Shift PDFs have toyed with how Dungeon Masters can set their games in the various Magic: The Gathering planes.
“Mythic Odysseys of Theros” will go for sale June 2, 2020, and will be available at your friendly local game store.
