Before I begin, I was provided a prototype for this review, and will receive a production copy upon fulfillment of the campaign. This is not a paid preview. If you would prefer to check out a video review OR a playthrough you can check those out below. To learn more click here.
I love a good pun. Seriously, I can barely get enough of them. I also like cats…I have a cat, I like cat videos. So a quick game about cats in a pyramid, with a punny title? Yup! Bring it on!
In Cleocatra each player has three cat rescuers who are sent to collect the various cats roaming around the pyramids. And they need to do it right MEOW! Each turn players must take two actions, one of which can be a “tile” action. Tile actions allow players to place a new tile, if available, or move another tile that does not have anyone on it. Rescuer actions allow meeples to be placed, moved, or score a tile.
Scoring is quite simple. For each adjacent tile, of a different color you earn a point and additional points for meeples adjacent to the scoring tile. Then all the meeples are removed and an inspector is placed which prevents that tile being scored again until the inspector is moved. Each tile has a different power that can be used in “advanced mode”. The first player to 23 points wins!
So what do I think?
It is so fast, so portable, and the cats are so cute. Even the advanced version of the game plays super quickly, you can definitely get 3 or maybe 4 games in, in an hour.
I also enjoy the advanced version of the game, it is still simple enough that it is not a brain burner but has enough going on that it becomes much more of a challenge to predict what your opponent or opponents might do at any given time.
Tile laying games are often ones that I find can really bog down with AP, but this one is one that I would happily bust out with anyone for a quick game, and would love to play with my niece any day!
The game is quick and simple, and I have a feeling it is going to have many expansions options. This game is just built for them! I happen to know they are pondering a mummy expansion, an expert rescuer expansion, and a Caesar expansion! Super cool, but I do know that some folks are a little down on expansions. I am not one of them, but it is something to keep in mind.
I think the cats are super cute, and I am totally bummed that some of them look similar to others, I would be so much happier if they were all distinct. (I will note that this is actually being looked into!)
Bringing it all together
Cleocatra is a cute game that plays extremely quickly with enough strategy to keep you interested, but not so much that it falls into any heavy category of game. The cats are cute, but I do wish they were more different cats. This is a game that plays lightning-fast and will fit anywhere you can imagine! Yup, you can play this on an airplane tray table if you wanted to!
Just get to the point right MEOW!
* Adorable cat art, just wish there was more
* Simple to learn, fast to play
* Lots of expansion potential
* Not a heavy game, but a great option for a quick game, or for playing with children
*You might say it would be a CATastrophe if you don’t check it out
