Tech: Amazon Applies With FAA To Test Delivery Drones

Recently Amazon.com asked the FAA (U.S. Federal Aviation Administration) for  permission to test their Prime Air delivery drones outdoors. Amazon has been testing the drones inside its R&D lab in Seattle. The goal of Prime Air is to be a package delivery system, “which aims to deliver packages in 30 minutes or less, the online retailer is developing aerial vehicles that travel over 50 miles (80 kilometers) per hour, and will carry 5pound (2.3 kilogram) payloads, which account for 86 percent of the products sold on Amazon.”

The drones Amazon wants to test will meet the maximum weight of less than 55 pounds and will be battery powered rotor system. Amazon will conduct its tests in a “confined area over isolated Amazon private property, which is located at a sufficient distance away from airports and other locations with aviation activities, densely populated areas, and military or government installations or airfields.”
